Tools for Cutting Aluminium Coping

Firstly, you want to make sure you have the right tools – after all, what’s a builder without the right equipment? Luckily for you, there are several tools you can use to cut aluminium coping, each offering different benefits depending on your needs:

  1. Hacksaw: The trusty hacksaw is perfect for manually cutting your coping, it’s practically made for small cuts and adjustments. Top tip: use a fine-tooth blade specifically designed for metal to achieve the best results.
  2. Circular Saw: For faster and cleaner cuts, a circular saw with a metal-cutting blade is an excellent choice when it comes to creating straight, precise cuts – it’s great for working on larger pieces of aluminium coping.
  3. Angle Grinder: An angle grinder is ideal for more detailed work – we’re talking intricate cuts, specific shaping and smooth edges.

Step-by-Step Cutting Process

Now you have the right tools, you need to know what to do next. Follow these 4 simple steps and you’ll be good to go.

  1. Measure and Mark: Begin by measuring the aluminium coping to your desired length, marking it with a pencil or pen. You’re going to want to make sure your measurements are accurate to avoid any waste or incorrect cuts.
  2. Secure the Aluminium: Place the aluminium coping on a stable work surface and secure it with clamps – this stops any movement during cutting, resulting in a nice clean cut.
  3. Cutting the Aluminium: This depends on the tool you’ve chosen to work with.
    • If you’re using a hacksaw, take it slow and steady to ensure the cleanest possible cut.
    • With a circular saw, move the saw steadily along the marked line allowing the blade to do the work without forcing it.
    • When using an angle grinder, guide the tool along the marked line, applying consistent pressure for an even cut.
  4. Finishing Touches: After cutting, use a file or sandpaper to smooth any rough edges – you want the finish to be as clean and professional as possible (that means no sharp edges!).

By mastering these straightforward techniques, you can easily customise aluminium coping to fit your building’s exact specifications, enhancing its functionality and aesthetic appeal.
